JULIE

Julie was produced from 1987-1988 and was stated as "The World's Most Intelligent Talking Doll" and rightly so as you can see from all of the features mentioned below. Her cost at the time of 1987 was about $100.00 by 1988 she was down to $49.99 at various stores. (I know this from looking to buy one at the time).Unlike her counterpart Teddy Ruxpin,Julie wasn't a success story.

She uses 4 "C" batteries and runs 2 servo motors, without a tape player like Teddy Ruxpin she worked for a longer period of time before having problems. Her voice recognition was quite an accomplishment for it's time.

Today Julie is getting harder to find in good shape and her books/voice cartridges and accessories even harder to locate.

Julie's Box is very nicely done and there were so called "GOLD EDITION" boxes that had 18kt. Gold "Julie" Lettering.

No this is not one of them!

All WOW Boxes had very good graphics.

This how she looked out of the box.

The hairnet usually flattened her hair so when you took it off she needed a hair brush.

Julie's hair is made of saran, which feels like silk, and has a shimmer to it.

Her she is in her mechanical glory. Her speaker is very large and sounds very clear.

Julie had several unique features here is one.

In her right eye is a photosensor which detects light and dark.

She will let you know if it is to bright,or on the reverse side if it is to dark.

Here is a better shot of the photosensor.

I have done to date 2011 321 Julie Restorations from that number 75% have come to me with a broken neck/head assembly.

Usually caused by a fall or smack, and yes even in the bottom of the toy chest with other toys piled on her.I have gotten new ones like this as well. The plastic is very thin in the area shown in the picture,so it doesn't take much to start a crack. Here at A.F. this area is reinforced and broken ones pinned.

Julie has a On (Green Button) and a Off (Red Button) If not manually turned off she will automatically turn off in time when idle.

The small black spot between the on and off button is her voice recognition reset,a blunt pencil works best for this, push the pencil lightly in on the button and she will start the voice recognition sequence.

Like all WOWs' she has a dial volume button turn it to the right to raise her volume.

To the upper left you see a rounded section this is the voice recognition pickup.

Julie's voice recognition was designed by TI (Texas Instruments) and I have been fortunate to be in touch with a few who worked for TI on what they called "The Julie Project"

She was supposedly the first consumer product to have voice recognition.

She will start the voice recognition sequence by saying "Hello I'm Julie" I have had what is believed to be a few rare original Julie's that say "Hi I'm Julie"

Say Julie and she'll reply "Yes"

Here is her "Tickle Button" located in the "tummy" area.Push it in several times and she will giggle. Now how cute is that.

Julie also has (2) metal pickup sensors in her fingers.

If you take her by the hand and gently push them in on the darkened squares (shown in the picture to the right) in her books she will say an additional phrase. My favorite is when you push in the one of her dog she says "Mr. Bones"

As stated before the darkened squares in all of Julie's Books are used for additional phrases by gently pushing her sensored fingers into them "can't over emphasize" gently here folks.

You say what more features!

Yes of course, do you notice the small metal ball inside the metal cage a very crude motion sensor but gets the job done.

If she gets moved suddenly like picking her up fast she will say "are we going somewhere".

Another feature of her's is a temperature sensor, put her in a hot area and she will let you know, the same for a colder area like out in the snow.

This area located on the back of Julie is for an additional voice cartridge, which will expand her vocabulary/phrases even more.

Gently push it in to start, push it in slightly to release it.

This is a Julie Voice Cartridge.

  • Fun and Games
  • Julie's Favorite Places
  • Julie's Neighborhood
  • Let's Go To Julie's House
  • Meet Julie
  • School Time
  • When Julie Grows Up

The list above was supposed to be released to the consumer but because of problems WOW was having it didn't happen.

I have only had or seen 4 out of the 7

  • Julie's Favorite Places
  • Julie's Neighborhood
  • Let's Go To Julie's House
  • Meet Julie

These are extremely rare and I have sold them and seen them sold from $100.00-$350.00

The "Meet Julie" cartidge was limited to an initial few boxed Julie's sold and was discontinued to save cost.I have only seen a picture of (1) one to date.

A Mint In The Package Julie's Neighborhood sold for $350.00 on ebay several years ago.

A Julie Book, these books are very sturdy much like Pamela's and the Voice Cartridge is somewhat the same as Pamela's.

Like Pamela, Julie's Books came with sticker sheets.

They are all very colorful.

Now where would a girl be without accessories.

Julie is no exception with various outfits.

Here again these are becoming rarer by the years.

Julie wasn't produced for long, like say Teddy Ruxpin she went for about a year run so that being said there are fewer to be had today and the accessories are getting even harder to find.
